McCalla homeowner shoots intruder

A man wounded by gunfire found walking down the road in McCalla earlier today was trying to force his way inside the residence when he was shot by the homeowner, authorities said this afternoon.

No criminal charges will be filed against the shooter.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies responded about 7 a.m. Monday to a report of a person with a weapon in the 6500 block of Loveless Park Loop, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian. When they arrived, they found an adult male suffering from gunshot wounds in the 6200 block of Lou George Loop Road. He was with a woman.

Christian said deputies learned the man had been shot by another man at the Loveless Park Loop scene. Deputies went to the home but no one was there.

A short time later, someone called 911 to report the shooter was in a wooded area behind the residence. As deputies began to search, the person involved walked out of the woods and surrendered without incident.

The gunshot victim was taken to the hospital, but is expected to recover. The shooter and the woman were questioned by investigators.

Christian Monday afternoon said the homeowner heard a knock at his door. He looked out to see a person wearing a hoodie with their face covered. He got his gun, and told the person to identify themselves, but the person refused. The homeowner told the person he had a gun.

When the homeowner looked out again, he saw a person running away. He opened the door to find a second person crouched in front of it. He backed into his house and ordered the person to stop, but the man continued to advance, Christian said. The homeowner fired a shot that struck the man. The suspect then fled on foot to where he was located by deputies.

Detectives learned that the suspects were the niece of the homeowner and her fiancee. They came to the residence to use force to take back property they believed had been stolen from her.

Christian said the case will be reviewed by a grand jury for determination of charges against the niece and her fiancee.

Police: Woman had EPO against man killed in Powell County shooting

Stanton, Ky. (WKYT) - A Powell County man was shot and killed Wednesday night after what police called a confrontation. According to Kentucky State Police Steven Strange, 39, confronted Melissa Roberts, 32, inside her Stanton home. Strange was then shot in the chest with a 12-gauge shotgun, police said. The Powell County Coroner pronounced him dead at the scene. According to Powell County Sheriff's deputies, they've responded to the home on Cow Creek Road several times before. They say that Roberts had an Emergency Protective Order against Strange at the time of the shooting. Robert's friend, who didn't want to be identified, said that Roberts is very upset about what happened. "She's not doing good mentally. She's just devastated. She said the only thing she wanted to do was shoot him in the leg to let him know she's done with being abused." During the 911 call a woman identifying herself as Melissa Roberts can be heard asking for an ambulance for Stevens. "Just try to stay calm." a dispatcher tells her. "OK. You hear me?" "I'm panicking," Roberts responds. "I can't stay calm. I just killed the man I love." So far, police have not filed charges in the case. State police said they will be presenting the case to a grand jury who will decide if Roberts should be indicted on any charges.
